This Wretched Coin" - This was the comment in an article in the Daily Telegraph June 27 1887 which heavily criticised its arrival.

The worse thing however was the size, only slightly smaller than the crown piece (5 shillings), the double florin (4 Shillings) was often passed in the dingy pubs to the barmaids as the larger coin, hence the nickname 'the barmaids ruin'.

It only lasted for six years before it was withdrawn to the relief of the barmaid.

Queen Victoria reigned from the age of 18 until her death in 1901 which saw Edward VII coming to the throne.

Various dates. Coins are in a fine to very fine condition
