The Incredible Voyage Shackleton’s Expedition Photo Portfolio from 1915
In 1914 Sir Ernest Shackleton and a crew of 27 set sail aboard The Endurance, bound for Antarctica. So began an epic adventure battling through treacherous icy waters, culminating in the ship’s loss. An astonishing story of bravery and survival unfolded as the men were left stranded in sub zero temperatures for twenty two months before their eventual rescue. Capturing all this drama on film was the expedition photographer, Frank Hurley, whose pictures have, up until now, only been seen in books and exhibitions, stored away securely between time, at the Royal Geographical Society. Recently we were given the opportunity to purchase eleven negatives taken from the original photos and have reproduced them in a limited, numbered edition of 200 portfolios. In 2003 the Royal Mail also released a set of stamps entitled Extreme Endeavours.
