Philip and Mary Groat 1554-1558
The Queen Mary's Marriage Act was passed by the Parliament of England in April 1554. It was to allow joint reign of England By Philip and Mary for as long as the marriage survived. Restrictions were placed so that Philip could not claim the throne if Mary was to die before him. In reality it seems to have been a business deal between England and Spain. Two Groats were issued for this reign one with just the name of Mary and this rarer type, offered here, with the names of both Philip and Mary in the legend. Mary Portrait is shown on both types. Coins are in VF condition
