1660-1685 Charles II Silver Maundy Set Dated
The Royal Maundy, a religious service full of beauty and colour, is held annually on Maundy Thursday, the day preceding Good Friday.
Extensive searches have revealed that the earliest known Maundy distribution by an English Monarch took place in 1210 the reign of King John.It was a way for the Monarch to give the poor clothing, food and money. In the reign of Edward II, John’s successor, the act of Pedilavium, the washing of feet of the poor, was also undertaken by the Monarch as well as the gifts.
We have these sets from the reign of Charles II that have silver groat/fourpence, threepence, twopence and penny and are all dated. The King’s bust faces right with 'c' on the reverse interlocking representing the value of each coin. The coins are dated and in fine/very fine condition.
