Product code: 6289

2017 Magellanic Penguin 50p Series from the Falkland Islands

A new series of coloured fifty pence was struck for the island that refers to itself as the penguin capital of the world. It was nearly ten years since Pobjoy Mint had started striking currency for the Falkland Islands and felt they needed to do something special to mark this occasion.

The Fifth in the series( Magellanic penguin)

The Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus), named after Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan,is a penguin indigenous to the Falkland Islands, where they nest in dense flocks. In appearance, they are similar to a Humboldt penguin, with black bodies, white abdomens and with two black bands between the head and the chest. Their heads are black with a white stripe running across their eyebrows. In the wild these penguins can live to around 25 years!

These uncirculated cupro nickel diamond finish fifty pence have a low mintage of just 7,500.
