1834 William IV Silver Halfcrown

Product code: 1585

William IV 1834 Silver Halfcrown

Unlike many monarchs depicted in elaborate crowns, William IV appears bareheaded on the obverse. This unconventional choice adds a touch of personality and informality to the coin. The reverse depicts a crowned shield of the British arms, a symbol of enduring monarchy. The date, “1834,” sits prominently below

William IV’s reign only lasted seven years, making his coins scarcer than those of longer- reigning monarchs. This scarcity adds to the collectability of the 1834 halfcrown.

The William IV Silver Half Crown was minted during the reign of King William IV (1830–1837). The half crown was valued at two shillings and sixpence (2s 6d), or 1/8 of a pound sterling, and was made of sterling silver (92.5% silver).

Historical Significance

The William IV half crown was issued during a time of significant economic and political change in Britain, including the 1832 Reform Act, which expanded voting rights. William IV’s short reign meant that fewer coins were produced compared to other monarchs, making his coinage rarer and highly collectible today.

Collectibility and Value

Due to its historical significance, silver content, and limited mintage, the William IV half crown is highly sought after by collectors. Prices vary based on condition, with well-preserved specimens in Extremely Fine (EF) or better condition being particularly valuable.
