The William IV Silver Half Crown was minted during the reign of King William IV (1830–1837). The half crown was valued at two shillings and sixpence (2s 6d), or 1/8 of a pound sterling, and was made of sterling silver (92.5% silver).

Design and Features

• Obverse:

  • Features a right-facing portrait of King William IV, designed by William Wyon.
  • The inscription around the portrait reads:
    "GULIELMUS IIII D:G: BRITANNIAR: REX F:D:", meaning William IV, by the Grace of God, King of the Britains, Defender of the Faith.

• Reverse:

  • Displays an ornate shield of arms with a crowned Royal Coat of Arms.
  • The shield is divided into four quadrants, representing England (three lions), Scotland (lion rampant), and Ireland (harp), with the Hanoverian arms (horse and crown) in the center.
  • No inscription on the reverse, unlike later Victorian half crowns.
