During the reign of George III the the state was suffering from the lack of coinage in circulation. Whilst contracts where given to the Soho Mint to ease the copper issues it also introduced seized Spanish Reales with countermarks of George III's head struck into them which indicated they were legal tender in the British empire and given a value of 4 shilling and 9 pence.
