The upheaval of the English Civil War was borne out on the coinage. Firstly, there are the coins of Charles I, then those of towns besieged during the war, followed by a coinage issued under the authority of the Commonwealth parliament. Finally, there were those coins produced for the Lord Protector - Oliver Cromwell. Of all the coins from this era those of Cromwell are the fi nest artistically.
