2017 Falkland Island Penguin 50p Series

Alternative Views:

A new series of coloured fifty pence have been struck for the island that refers to itself as the penguin capital of the world. It has now been nearly ten years since Pobjoy Mint started striking currency for the Falkland Islands and felt they needed to do something special to mark this occasion.

The first penguin is the Northern Rockhopper

A quirky penguin with it’s black and yellow spiky plume, red eyes and pink webbed feet, his wings are raised ready to hop. The Gentoo, King and Magellanic will be released throughout 2017 and to keep your penguins safe there is also a delightful collector’s pack to unite the set. These uncirculated cupro nickel diamond finish fifty pence have a low mintage of just 7,500 and with the prices of the I.O.M. fifty pences now commanding £100 plus, may be this might be a set for the future.

Please note******This coin is now a known error. The image you see is of a Northern Rockhopper and as we all know the Falkland Islands are in the southern hemisphere. This has now been corrected by Pobjoy but we have been lucky enough to get hold of these rare strikes. Only 3200 making this rarer than any Royal Mint issue. This also now means there will be 5 coins in the series

The Second In the Series( Southern Penguin)

The Southern Rockhopper, a quirky penguin with it’s signature hairstyle, black and yellow spiky plume, red eyes and pink webbed feet, his wings are raised ready to hop straight into your collection. The Gentoo, King and Magellanic will be released throughout 2017 and to keep your penguins safe there is also a delightful collector’s pack to unite the set. These uncirculated cupro nickel diamond finish fifty pence have a low mintage of just 7,500.

The Third in the Series (Gentoo Penguin)

The Gentoo Penguin is the second penguin to be released in this very popular fifty pence series, struck for the Falkland Islands by Pobjoy Mint. The reverse features an adult Gentoo Penguin cuddled up with its two chicks, sitting on a rocky mountain outcrop where they like to nest. This penguin is renowned for its waddle and sweeping tail that moves side to side when it walks. These uncirculated cupro nickel diamond finish fifty pence have a low mintage of just 7,500.

The Fourth in the Series(King Penguin)

The King is the third penguin to be released in this very popular fifty pence series, struck for the Falkland Islands by Pobjoy Mint. The reverse features an adult male King penguin with his smaller companion lovingly touching their beaks. This penguin is a very large species of penguin, second only to the Emperor penguin and reaches a height of about 100 cm and weight of 18 kg. They can dive to incredible depths of over 100m to catch small fish and squid. The final penguin, the Magellanic will be released in September 2017 and to keep your all your penguins safe there is also a delightful collector’s pack to unite the set. These uncirculated cupro nickel diamond finish fifty pence have a low mintage of just 7,500.

The Fifth in the series( Magellanic penguin)

The last 50p and officially the fourth to be released in the series. The Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus), named after Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, is a penguin indigenous to the Falkland Islands, where they nest in dense flocks. In appearance, they are similar to a Humboldt penguin, with black bodies, white abdomens and with two black bands between the head and the chest. Their heads are black with a white stripe running across their eyebrows. In the wild these penguins can live to around 25 years!

I am pleased with the service and quick delivery , only negative would be the postage charge , i have been very tempted to buy the northern rockhopper but paying another £3.99 postage charge puts me off ,wish that  I had ordered both penguins at the same time, otherwise a very good service.
